The soul is one in essence, but has five faculties:

  1. the élan vital,
  2. the senses,
  3. imagination and creativity,
  4. appetite formed by the passions and
  5. the will and reason understood as freedom and understanding.

Man is free and freedom is a function of intelligence.

Man is free and this freedom, acting as such, can by its own strength selflessly do good
